Eagles' Hockey East Title Run Comes Up Just Short

Northeastern holds on for a 3-2 victory
BOSTON – Third-seeded Northeastern scored three goals in the opening 12 minutes and the Huskies held on for a 3-2 victory over seventh-seeded Boston College in the Hockey East Championship Game on Saturday night at TD Garden.
The loss ends the season for the Eagles (14-22-3) after a furious postseason run with victories over the top two seeds. BC became the lowest seed in Hockey East history to reach the title game, its 18th in the 35 years of the league tournament.
Boston College finished the night with a 40-26 edge in shots on goal, including a 32-15 advantage in the final 40 minutes. BC scored both of its goals on the power play early in the second period.
David Cotton and Logan Hutsko each posted multi-point games, while Cotton closed the weekend with 19 shots on goal. Hutsko was injured early in the third period and did not return.
Northeastern struck first just 2:31 into the game as Matt Filipe picked up a loose puck in front of the net and roofed his eighth goal of the season into the upper left corner.
The Huskies doubled their lead at the 5:08 mark as Brandon Hawkins picked up a rebound and spun a shot into the lower right corner past Joseph Woll (23 saves) for a 2-0 advantage.
Northeastern added a third on the power play as Hawkins scored his second of the night at 11:15, ripping a shot from the point through traffic which snuck inside the right post.
Boston College started the second period on the power play and wasted little time as Oliver Wahlstrom scored his eighth goal of the season near the left post just 18 seconds into the period. It marked the fastest goal to start a period in Hockey East Championship Game history, breaking the mark previously held by BC's Tim Sweeney against Maine in 1989.
The power play momentum continued less than two minutes later as Cotton tallied his league-leading 23rd goal of the season. Cotton took a whack at a loose puck following a rebound which rolled inside the left post to cut the Huskies' lead to one.
The Eagles pulled Woll for an extra skater in the final 90 seconds of regulation and Wahlstrom grazed the outside of the short side post from the left circle, but BC couldn't force overtime.
The game marked the first time that the two rivals have met in the Hockey East Championship Game in the 238th meeting all-time between the two schools.
