Passing game shines in second scrimmage of the spring
CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. – The Boston College football team completed its second scrimmage of and the ninth overall practice of the spring Saturday inside Fish Field House. A packed house with 300 high school coaches attending along with a host of current and future NFL Eagles watching from the sideline.
Â
"I think we have a lot of good players making a lot of plays and a quarterback in Anthony Brown that can make all the plays," head coach Steve Addazio said after the scrimmage. "Anthony has clearly taken the next step and you are really starting to see it."
Â
Brown showed tremendous vision and accuracy as the Eagles vertical passing display was impressive. A host of tight ends had big days, including sophomore Hunter Long and senior Chris Garrison.
Â
"Our tight ends are making plays all over the field and it's tough to defend right now," said Addazio. "As a group, they all can do so many different things and we are trying to utilize their specific skills."
Â
First-year offensive coordinator Mike Bajakian has made a seamless transition so far adding some new wrinkles to the offensive attack. "We are doing what we do and Mike has brought in a few new nuances that have been terrific. He has done a great job with the quarterbacks and we are well established with what we want to do on offense right now."
Â
Defensively, Addazio has been happy with the progress the young secondary is making along with some key pieces on the defensive line to go along with a strong set of linebackers.
Â
"The young corners are playing well, especially Brandon Sebastian, Tate Haynes and Elijah Jones. I really like what I see with those three. We are getting better on the interior of the defensive line and we have an impressive group of linebackers."
Â
On special teams, sophomore Danny Longman and redshirt freshman John Tessitore have both shown solid improvement this spring. "Both guys are working hard and are talented, but they need a lot of seasoning. We are formulating a lot of things to put as much pressure on them as we can and have them kick under pressure. We just need both of them to continue to grow and become more consistent in the kicking game."
Â
Scrimmage Notes: Several former players were back at practice Saturday, including Jon Baker, Aaron Monteiro, Chris Lindstrom, Wyatt Ray, Jeff Smith, Hamp, Cheevers, Michael Walker, Connor Strachan, Tommy Sweeney along with current NFL standouts Isaac Yiadom, John Johnson and Matt Milano … quarterback Anthony Brown was throwing darts during Saturday's scrimmage, especially with his accuracy in throwing guys in stride with big plays down the field. Brown found Garrison in stride for a 25-yard touchdown along with multiple 20+ yard passing plays to Hunter Long, Noah Jordan-Williams and Christian McStravick … EJ Perry found Long for a perfect corner route for a big gain while Matt McDonald hit wide receiver Andrew Strader for a 65-yard touchdown pass along with a nice completion to Jehlani Galloway for some chunk yards … Nolan Borgersen and Ezechiel Tiede each had an interception during Saturday's scrimmage … AJ Dillon scored on a one-yard touchdown run … Tessitore connected on a 38-yard field goal with the entire team surrounding him … Max Richardson made a monster stop on Ben Glines … John Lamot had a quarterback pressure on a blitz while Nick DeNucci had a would-be sack as well … Brandon Barlow finished with one sack and he continues to be a player to watch at defensive end … the first-team offensive line of Ben Petrula, Anthony Palazzolo, Alec Lindstrom, John Phillips and Tyler Vrabel has been strong and efficient this spring, both in pass protection and the run game … BC returns to practice on Monday, Wednesday and Saturday next week inside Fish Field House.
