Jerry York picks up win No. 600 at Boston College
BOSTON – Boston College head coach Jerry York captured win number 600 during his tenure as the seventh-seeded Eagles upset No. 1 seed and second-ranked Massachusetts 3-0 Friday night in the Hockey East Semifinal at TD Garden.
The Eagles advanced to the 35th Hockey East Championship Game and will look for their league-record 12th league title Saturday night against 3-seed and No. 6 Northeastern, which beat Boston University 2-1 in overtime in the first semifinal.
Junior goaltender Joseph Woll was strong in net all night for the Eagles, finishing with 36 saves for his third shutout of the season. BC is just the third team to shutout UMass this season.
York became just the fourth Division I coach to win 600 games at the same school, joining Jack Parker (BU), Red Berenson (Michigan) and Ron Mason (Michigan State). York also became the all-time wins leader in Hockey East Tournament history with his 63rd career victory, passing Parker.
BC improved to 9-1 all-time in the Hockey East playoffs against UMass with the victory. It was the first win in three meetings this season against the Minutemen.
David Cotton broke the scoreless tie with 12.3 seconds remaining in the first period to give the Eagles a 1-0 lead. Logan Hutsko and Julius Mattlia were credited with the assists on Cotton's league-leading 22nd of the season.
BC doubled its lead to 2-0 at the 12:36 mark of the third period as Christopher Grando slammed home a perfect pass from JD Dudek to cap off a 2-on-1. Casey Fitzgerald also had an assist on Grando's third goal of the season.
Julius Mattila added an empty-net goal at the 19:22 mark to secure the shutout victory over the top overall seed.
The Eagles will be making their first Hockey East Championship Game appearance since a 4-3 loss to UMass Lowell in the 2017 title game. BC is in search of its first Hockey East title since 2012 tomorrow night against the Huskies in a rematch of the Beanpot title game.
