Hutsko’s Winner 23 Seconds Into Overtime Extends Quarterfinals to Game 3
March 16, 2019 | Men's Hockey
PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Logan Hutsko won a 1-on-1 race and tucked a shot under the crossbar just 23 seconds into overtime as Boston College extended its season with a 4-3 victory over No. 7 Providence in Game 2 of the best-of-three Hockey East Quarterfinals at Schneider Arena on Saturday night.
The Eagles and Friars will face off in a decisive Game 3 on Sunday night at 5 p.m. with a trip to TD Garden on the line.
Hutsko's winner snapped a 19-game goal scoring drought for the sophomore, who raced onto a backhand clearance from Michael Kim on the first shift of overtime. Hutsko gained leverage on Jacob Bryson before cutting to the inside and lifting a forehand into the top left corner.
The winger closed the night with a season-high three points, while Kim had a pair of assists for his second straight multi-point playoff performance.
For the second straight night in the series, Boston College took a two-goal lead into the first intermission. JD Dudek sniped the upper left corner from the right circle eight minutes into the contest for his seventh of the year. Less than 90 seconds later, David Cotton used his backhand to redirect a centering pass from Julius Mattila through Hayden Hawkey's five-hole.
Josh Wilkins pulled Providence even with a pair of goals in the second period. The forward wristed a shot glove side on Joseph Woll (34 saves) directly off a faceoff at 5:44 and knotted the score on a one-timer from the low slot at 15:09 as the puck trickled past Woll's blocker.
Kasper Björkqvist gave PC its first lead of the night six minutes into the third period as he stepped into a snap shot from the high slot and picked the upper corner
The Eagles earned their second power play of the game with six and a half minutes remaining and grabbed an equalizer on Marc McLaughlin's second goal of the series. Hutsko took a look over his shoulder from below the goal line and sent a backhand pass to McLaughlin, whose one-timer beat Hawkey (23 saves) inside the left post.
BC's penalty kill was a perfect 3-for-3, while the power play finished 1-for-2.
