Hutsko Sends Eagles to the Garden with Game 3 Winner in Providence
March 17, 2019 | Men's Hockey
PROVIDENCE, R.I. – For the second straight night at Schneider Arena, Logan Hutsko was the hero as he netted the game-winning goal with eight minutes left in the third period to snap a 1-1 tie, sending the Eagles to TD Garden with an upset of No. 7 Providence in the decisive Game 3 of the Hockey East Quarterfinals on Sunday.
BC will face No. 1 seed UMass in the Hockey East Semifinals next Friday night (March 22) at 7:30 p.m. in Boston. 3-seed Northeastern will meet 5-seed Boston University in the first semifinal at 4 p.m.
The Eagles will be making their fourth straight trip to the semifinal round as they chase their league-record 12th Hockey East title.
Senior defenseman Casey Fitzgerald had a pair of assists in the win at Schneider, while junior Joseph Woll stopped 37 of the 38 shots he faced in net.
Michael Kim broke a scoreless deadlock on Boston College's third power play attempt eight minutes into the second period. Kim reeled in a pass from fellow captain Fitzgerald and skated into the left-wing circle before ripping a shot into the far corner glove side.
Hutsko rang the left pipe near the end of the middle frame from the high slot, using a Friar defenseman as a screen.
After serving a minor in the third, Scott Conway exited the penalty box and provided the equalizer for Providence during an abbreviated power play. Josh Wilkins' right side one-timer was kicked out by Woll into the low slot, and Conway beat the BC defense to the puck to finish the rebound at 6:58.
Hutsko had the answer five minutes later as he picked up the puck from Fitzgerald near the point and skated into the right wing circle. The sophomore delayed before snapping a shot inside the left post from the dot to beat Hayden Hawkey (25 saves) clean on the blocker side. Julius Mattila collected the second assist on the game-winning tally.
Following Hutsko's effort to regain the lead, Boston College kept Providence at bay as the Friars pulled Hawkey with under 90 seconds remaining. Christopher Grando made a diving block in the slot to protect the lead and PC couldn't tie the game after calling its timeout with 1:05 left.
