Long Ball Looms Large in Loss for BC
March 16, 2019 | Baseball
Five-run leads vanishes at Wake Forest.
Junior right-hander Matt Gill (Simsbury, Conn.) ran into trouble after facing the minimum through three. Wake first baseman Bobby Seymour got to him for a two-run homer, the first Deacon hit of the day, in the fourth.
The fifth inning started with a leadoff-walk and an error on the infield to set the table. A run came in on a single by third baseman Bruce Steel and then a grand slam flipped a two-run BC lead to a two-run deficit as shortstop Patrick Frick went deep to right. Wake Forest plated 13 runs in the inning on seven hits, including two home runs, and five walks as 17 batters faced three Boston College pitchers.
The Eagles jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first inning with four hits and took advantage of two Wake errors. Senior third baseman Jake Alu (Hamilton, N.J.) drove in the first run with a single through the left side. Senior catcher Gian Martellini (Johnston, R.I.) had the big hit in the inning; a two-run double to left-center.
Lefty Jared Shuster (4-0) surrendered five runs, four earned, on six hits and a walk with seven strikeouts. He threw 100 pitches in five innings and was lifted after his offense put 13 runs on the board.
Gill (2-2) was pulled after 4.1 innings of work. He allowed eight runs, seven earned, on three hits and four walks with three strikeouts.
