McLaughlin’s Rebound Powers Eagles Past No. 9 Northeastern
March 01, 2019 | Men's Hockey
CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. – Rookie Marc McLaughlin buried a rebound six minutes into the third period and David Cotton added an empty-netter as Boston College snapped its six-game losing streak with a 3-1 victory over No. 9 Northeastern on Senior Night at Kelley Rink.
The Eagles moved back above .500 in Hockey East at 10-9-3, pulling within one point of sixth-place Maine and two points of fifth-place BU with two league games remaining. The Huskies (21-10-1, 13-8-1 HEA) saw their five-game winning streak come to a close.
Joseph Woll stopped 21 shots to pick up the victory, while senior Casey Fitzgerald netted the first of three straight BC goals.
After a scoreless first period, Austin Plevy tipped a shot past Woll three minutes into the middle frame to open the scoring. Fitzgerald answered exactly three minutes later, going bar down from the right circle to beat Cayden Primeau (30 saves) blocker side.
BC killed off back-to-back Northeastern power plays in the latter stages of the period and the teams entered the third tied 1-1.
Six minutes into the third, McLaughlin netted the eventual game-winner following a wraparound bid from Jack McBain. The puck squirted back to Michael Karow on the left wing for a one-timer, and McLaughlin pounced on Primeau's rebound near the right post.
NU pulled Primeau for an extra skater with less than 90 seconds remaining, and Christopher Brown set up Cotton for an empty-netter to seal the points at 19:28.
Boston College finished the night 3-for-3 on the penalty kill and is now 8-for-8 over its last three games.
