Four standouts from the lacrosse team have earned an early nod as National Player of the Year contenders
NEW YORK – Four members of the Boston College women's lacrosse team have been named to the Tewaaraton Award Watch List for the 2019 season. Graduate student Kenzie Kent along with seniors Sam Apuzzo, Dempsey Arsenault and Elizabeth Miller have been placed on the initial 50-athlete list as the award is given to the best lacrosse player in the nation annually.
Apuzzo finds her way to the list for the third time in her career as the reigning recipient of last year's award. The senior is the first Tewaaraton recipient in Boston College program history. Also an official nominee in 2017, Apuzzo currently sits atop the Eagles all-time goal scorer and point scorer lists. Following her junior campaign, the record-breaker was also named the IWLCA Attacker of the Year and Player of the Year. Â Â
Similarly, Kent finds her way to the Watch List for the third time in her career. The dual-sport athlete reached the 100-point marker in just 25 games – tied for fastest in program history with Apuzzo. She currently ranks fifth all-time in assists at BC with 73, despite only playing in 34 games. In her most recent season with the Eagles, she put up 77 points in just 12 games – ninth-most for a single season in program history. In 2017, she became the first student-athlete from a losing team in history to be named the Most Outstanding Player in the NCAA Tournament.
Arsenault has now been named to the Watch List in two consecutive seasons. The midfielder holds seven individual single-season records in BC's record book: fourth in points (2018, 103p), fifth in goals (2018, 64g.), third in assists (2018, 39a) second (2018, 59 gb) and ninth (2017, 48 gb) in ground balls and second (2018, 111 dc) and 10th (2018, 48 dc) in draw controls. Â
Miller, reigning IWLCA Defender of the Year, has also once previously been named to the National Player of the Year Watch List. A two-time IWLCA All-America selection, Miller has earned a spot on the starting lineup each contest of her career and has been part of the defensive unit holding the Eagles' opponents to just 48 goals to BC's 96 over their five games this season.
The Tewaaraton Watch List highlights 50 male and 50 female athletes across all three divisions of NCAA lacrosse. Additional athletes may be selected as additions as the season continues.
