Fencing Competes at ACC Championships

The host-Eagles closed out the season at Conte Forum.
CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. – The Men's and Women's ACC Fencing championships were held in Conte Forum this past weekend.

The men's team finishes the season at 15-11 and the women's team at 16-13, marking the first time since the 2015-2016 season that both teams have finished with winning records. Both teams will take the next two weeks and prepare for the NCAA Regionals held at Vassar on Sunday, March 10.

WOMEN
On Saturday, competition began with the women's individual event with the Eagles being led by freshman Christina Ko's eighth-place finish in epee. In the afternoon, the Eagles took on Notre Dame, falling 23-4. Standing out was junior captain, Gabrielle Chau, who swept Notre Dame's sabre squad 3-0. In the second round, BC rallied to keep it competitive with sixth-ranked Duke, before eventually falling 18-9. Gillian Lawlor, Brooke Solsky and Laura Boden all went 2-1 against the Blue Devils. In the final round, the Eagles were unable to pull themselves out of an early deficit and lost to last year's champions, UNC. Lawlor, Crystal Chen and Jaime Bang were all 2-1 against the Tar Heels.Â

MEN
The men's team competition kicked off with the Eagles going up against CollegeFencing360.com's coaches poll top-ranked team Notre Dame, with Eagles losing 23-4. In the second round, the Eagles battled sixth-ranked Duke in front of an incredible crowd in Conte, who helped BC jump out to 5-2 lead against the Blue Devils before eventually falling, 19-8. BC men's sabre squad paced the Eagles with a 5-4 win over the Duke, with Spencer Kuldell and Ben Slavin going 2-1. In the final round, BC improved on their 11-16 loss to UNC two weeks ago, but still fell narrowly to the Tar Heels by the score of 12-15. Men's foil carried the Eagles with a 6-3 victory, paced by senior captain Cameron Mayer who went 3-0.

Sunday morning was a historic one for the men as two student-athletes qualified for the individual championships for the first time in men's program history. Kuldell and fellow first year Thomas Junseo Park won 10 bouts each in sabre and epee, respectively. Both qualified for the championship rounds and finished fourth. Slavin and Mayer also finished eighth in their events.
