Eagles Suffer First Loss of Spring Season at No. 18 Virginia

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Boston College won the doubles point and had its chances in singles, but eventually fell 5-2 at 18th-ranked Virginia on Saturday for its first loss in 10 matches this spring. BC fell to 9-1 (1-1 ACC), while the Cavaliers improved to 6-1 (2-0 ACC).
Boston College earned the doubles point following 6-4 victories from the teams of Yufei Long/Jackie Urbinati and Natasha Irani/Kylie Wilcox. Irani was the Eagles' lone victor in singles play as she beat Amber O'Dell in straight sets 6-1, 7-6 from the No. 4 slot.
Wilcox and Urbinati each went to the decisive third set in their matches before eventually falling in the No. 2 and 3 slots. Rookie Laura Lopez led Sofia Munera 4-0 in the first set but ended up dropping her match 6-4, 6-3. Maria Ross played in the No. 6 slot for BC and pushed Hunter Bleser but lost a 6-1, 7-5 decision.
45th-ranked Meghan Kelley earned a victory over No. 76 Yufei Long in No. 1 singles in straight sets for UVA.
The Eagles host a pair of ranked Carolina schools on the Heights next weekend as they welcome No. 2 North Carolina on Friday (Feb. 22) at 1 p.m. and No. 17 NC State on Sunday (Feb. 24) at 11 a.m.
