Räsänen Nets Hat Trick in 5-1 Victory at UConn
November 09, 2019 | Men's Hockey
HARTFORD, Conn. – Aapeli Räsänen scored his first career hat trick to lead No. 19 Boston College past UConn 5-1 on Saturday afternoon at the XL Center as the Eagles swept a home-and-home series, outscoring the Huskies 11-1 in the process.
The Eagles won their third straight and moved back above .500 at 5-4-0 (3-2-0 HEA), while the Huskies fell to 2-5-1 (1-3-0 HEA).
Räsänen added an assist for a career-high four points to give him eight for the year, one more than his entire total from last season. Ben Finkelstein (1-1-2), Mike Hardman (1-1-2) and Alex Newhook (0-2-2) also collected multi-point performances.
BC peppered Tomas Vomacka in the UConn net with a season-best 46 shots on goal and allowed a season-low 17. Spencer Knight stopped 16 of those efforts for his fifth win.
The Eagles put 23 shots on goal in the first period and scored twice through Räsänen and Finkelstein to take the lead. Räsänen located a rebound at 6:19 of the second to stretch the lead on BC's second power play tally of the night.
Vladislav Firstov drew a goal back for the Huskies at 16:41 of the middle frame, but Hardman restored the three-goal cushion two minutes later following a strong net drive from Newhook.
Räsänen capped off his hat trick at the 13:15 mark of the third period, finishing a centering feed from Hardman inside the right post.
Boston College won the special teams battle, going 2-for-4 on the power play and 3-for-3 on the penalty kill.
