Naughton, Balido Lead Eagles to Sweep of Virginia Tech
November 08, 2019 | Volleyball
The duo combined for 29 kills as the volleyball team topped the Hokies in three sets
CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. – The Boston College volleyball team (18-9, 9-5 ACC) got back on track with a dominant 3-0 sweep over Virginia Tech (9-17, 2-11 ACC) on Friday night in Power Gym. The Eagles hit at a .292 as a team and held the Hokies to just a .077 attack percentage over the match.
Junior Clare Naughton shined once again for BC, tallying a match-best 17 kills and coming just short of a double-double with nine digs. Senior Cat Balido hit at a career-best .600, notching 12 kills off of 20 attempts with no errors. Jill Strockis and Jane DeJarld served the Eagles' two aces of the evening, as DeJarld and Madison McKnight each added 18 assists.
The Eagles' defense stood strong as three Eagles combined for at least four blocks, as freshman Gabby McCaa, sophomore Mackenzie Fuhrmann and junior Amaka Chukwujekwu each tallied four block assists while Chukwujekwu the only solo of the evening. Fuhrmann also earned her first career start in the win.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Set 1 – The Eagles came out hot, storming to an 8-1 lead through the opening points. BC continued to hold control as even a five-point run for the Hokies only brought the visitors within eight points at 22-14. Virginia Tech pushed for one final stretch but only found three more points, allowing the Eagles to answer each time and earn the win on a Chukwujekwu's solo block, 25-17.
Set 2 – The Hokies earned the opening point but the Eagles quickly found themselves with a 10-4 advantage. Virginia Tech steadily found their footing and answered each of BC's following points to push within two points late in the set, but a kill from Naughton capped the win for the Eagles, 25-22.
Set 3 – The eventual final set proved to be more evenly-matched, as the Eagles found the initial lead at 6-3 before allowing three straight Virginia Tech points for a tie score at 6-all. BC wasted no time regaining their lead as they soon found a 13-7 advantage, only allowing one point for the Hokies within the next eight. The teams bounced points back and forth but Virginia Tech couldn't find the momentum needed to bounce back, as the Eagles took the win on two straight Hokie attack errors, 25-16.
