Eagles Drop Heartbreaker to Irish

The volleyball team fell in five sets to Notre Dame on Sunday
CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. – The Boston College volleyball team (17-8, 8-4 ACC) suffered just their second five-set loss of the season at the hands of Notre Dame (16-6, 9-3 ACC) Sunday afternoon in Power Gym. Sophomore Jewel Strawberry led the Eagles' effort with her 11th double-double of the season, putting up 18 kills and 15 digs.
The Eagles combined for a .268 percent on the day compared to Notre Dame's .264 while tallying five more kills as a team, but the Irish defense proved to be the difference as the visitors recorded three more blocks than BC. Sophie West and Gabby McCaa both hit at error-free .500 percentages, while Strawberry's 18 kills was followed closely behind by Cat Balido's 14 and Amaka Chukwujekwu and Clare Naughton's 11 each. Setters Jane DeJarld and Madison McKnight combined for 62 assists on their teammates' points, with DeJarld leading the team with 32. McKnight recorded the Eagles' only two aces of the afternoon, coming on back-to-back serves in the third set.
Strawberry also led defensively, contributing on three block assists to mark team-best. McCaa, Chukwujekwu and Balido each added two while West, Naughton and Carly Kutschke tallied one a piece. Libero Torey Baum had a match-best 17 digs to mark a career best, while Balido and Jill Strockis each added 10.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Set 1 – BC stormed to an early 7-2 lead, led by two kills and a block from Balido. The Eagles added onto their convincing lead, taking an 11-4 advantage to force an Irish timeout. Notre Dame tallied four of the following six points out of the break to come within five points before trading points to a 19-13 score in BC's favor. The Irish added three two-point runs through the remainder of the opening set, but couldn't find the momentum needed to push ahead as the Eagles took it on a kill from Strawberry, 25-21.
Set 2 – The set opened up evenly, with the teams finding a 9-9 tie before Notre Dame picked up back-to-back points for a 12-10 lead. The Eagles bounced back to regain the advantage at 14-13, but the Irish quickly responded with four straight points to earn a 17-14 lead. BC brought it back within one point at 19-18, but couldn't answer with any significant rallies to take the lead as Notre Dame tied the match with a block from Caroline Meuth and Lauren Wenzel, 25-22.
Set 3 – BC had dominance over the middle set through its' entirety, jumping to a 10-3 lead which it would never relinquish. Notre Dame added two points to bring its total to five, but the Eagles answered with three more in their favor. Another five-point run for the Eagles would seem to seal the deal, as BC found itself up 19-7. Notre Dame answered with a three-point run late, but only edged to a 13 point total as BC regained the lead with two kills and a block from Chukwujekwu and Naughton.
Set 4 – The fourth set began similarly to the second as the teams found themselves tied multiple times through the opening points. BC gained the first lead at 12-9, pushing further to make it 15-10 after a kill from Sydney Bent. Notre Dame fought back with four straight points to come within one, after a kill from Kristin Baer and three from Charley Niego. At 15-14, BC answered with two from Chukwujekwu and Strawberry , but a late six-point rally from the Irish was the deciding factor as Notre Dame took a 22-19 lead. BC added two points from West and Strawberry but the Irish forced a fifth set with a 25-21 win.
Set 5 – Notre Dame claimed the deciding set from the beginning, grabbing a 7-1 lead and only allowing four more points for the Eagles as the Irish took the win, 15-5.
