Syracuse Edges BC in Five

Clare Naughton put up a career-best 20 kills but the Eagles fell just short against the Orange
CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. – The Boston College volleyball team (17-9, 8-5 ACC) dropped a midweek match to Syracuse (9-11, 6-7 ACC) falling in five sets in Power Gym Wednesday night. Junior Clare Naughton capped a career-best 20 kills as the Eagles won the first and third sets of the night.
Cat Balido tallied the next-best behind Naughton with kills, tallying 13. Jill Strockis hit at an error-free .444, marking four kills off of nine attacks. Amaka Chukwujekwu tallied 11 kills off of 19 attempts for a .368 percentage on the night. Jane DeJarld tallied a season-best 42 assists in the effort.
Defensively, freshman libero Torey Baum led with 12 digs as Carly Kutschke put up a team-best three blocks.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Set 1 – The Orange held the initial lead, taking a 3-0 advantage to open. BC answered back with five of the next six points for a 5-4 lead before Syracuse tied it at 5-5. The Eagles tallied the following four points to go up 9-5. Syracuse pushed within one point at 11-10 in BC's favor but the Eagles once again pushed ahead to earn an 18-13 lead. The Orange rallied for one more three-point rush but the Eagles took the win with a kill from Naughton, 25-19.
Set 2 – Syracuse had the upper-hand through most of the set, finding the first significant lead at 15-9. The visitors extended their advantage further to take a 21-14 lead, which BC wouldn't be able to catch up to. The Orange took the set and tied the match off of an ace from Polina Shemanova, 25-17.
Set 3 – The Eagles grabbed the opening lead, 6-3, before Syracuse answered back with four straight points to take just a one-point advantage at 8-7. BC tallied six out of the next seven points in the set to take a five-point lead at 14-9 and force a Syracuse timeout. After trading points, back-to-back kills from Strockis and Chukwujekwu brought the Eagles' lead to 21-13. Syracuse pushed through an impressive 7-1 point run but couldn't find the finish as BC regained the match lead with kills from Strockis and Naughton, 25-21.
Set 4 – The opening half of the fourth set was evenly contested with neither team finding more than a two-point advantage until Syracuse closed the set with a six-point run to go up 24-19. BC added one point with a kill from Naughton but Abby Casiano sealed the win for the Orange, 25-20.
Set 5 – The Orange found an early 10-4 lead which they would never relinquish, only allowing BC to add four more points. Shemanova and Casiano combined for a block to take the win, 15-8.
