Virginia Defense Bests Eagles

The volleyball team dropped a match against Virginia, who out-blocked the Eagles 16-3.
CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. –The Boston College volleyball team (19-10, 10-6 ACC) dropped a Friday night match to Virginia (12-18, 4-13 ACC) in straight sets in Charlottesville. The Cavaliers' blocking prowess proved to be the difference-maker as Virginia made 16 blocks and held BC to just three.

Junior Clare Naughton led with a match-best 12 kills, but the Eagles fell victim to 27 errors while Virginia committed only 14. The Cavaliers hit at a .260 over the night to BC's .056. Makenzie Morrison, Torey Baum and Madison McKnight each served up one ace.Â

Naughton also led the Eagles in the dig effort while Amaka Chukwujekwu contributed on two of BC's three blocks.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Set 1 – An early 8-1 lead for the Cavaliers set the pace for the home team, as the team quickly pushed to a 15-4 lead before allowing two points for BC to make it 15-6. The teams briefly traded points before the Eagles found a four-point run to bring the score to 22-13, but Virginia took the opening set, 25-16.
Set 2 –The Cavaliers found the early lead once again, opening up to a 4-1 score before allowing five straight BC points for the Eagles' first lead of the match. Virginia answered right back with five of their own to regain the lead at 9-6. The Eagles rallied off three more in a row to jump back, 12-11, but Virginia rallied for six straight to take a 17-12 lead which they wouldn't give up. Virginia took a 2-0 lead after wrapping up the set on a 4-1 run, capped with a kill from Jelena Novakovic, 25-19.
Set 3 –The third set proved to be much more evenly matched, as the frame found 11 tied scores before BC took the first significant lead at 20-17. Virginia bounced back with five of the following six points to earn a 23-21 advantage and only allowed one more point from BC before earning the win, 25-22.
