November 17, 2019 | Field Hockey
LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The No. 7 Boston College field hockey team is heading to its first-ever final four after defeating the No. 5 Louisville Cardinals on Sunday, Nov. 17 in Louisville, Ky. The game had to be decided in a shootout, where Margo Carlin would score the game-winner and Sarah Dwyer would make the final save to give the Eagles the victory.
Â
Dwyer made seven saves in the victory, including four in the overtime period to keep the Eagles' hopes alive.
Â
BC opened the scoring with just six seconds left in the first half off the stick of Elizabeth Warner. She redirected a shot on a penalty corner by Sky Caron to put the Eagles in front.
Louisville would answer, though, in the 35th minute, when Bethany Russ hit a reverse from just inside the circle into the back of the net.
Â
The game would then be back-and-forth through regulation and into overtime.
Â
BC's best chance of the overtime period came with 10 seconds left, when Carlin found Jaime Natale wide open on the right side of the goal. Natale beat the goalkeeper, but rang it off the post. The game would be going to a shootout.
Â
Louisville jumped to a quick lead, 2-0, in the shootout before Carlin and Sky Caron answered for the Eagles. Brigid Wood then had the ball on her stick to send the game into even more extra time, where she dribbled around the goalkeeper to keep BC's hopes alive.
Â
Wood then stepped right back up and scored again to give the Eagles the lead in the shootout. Louisville would answer, but Carlin gave BC another lead in the seventh round. Dwyer then stepped up, like she had all game, and made the game-winning save to end the game and the shootout.
