Eagles Top Miami in Five on the Road
October 20, 2019 | Volleyball
The volleyball team earned their first win over the Hurricanes since 2007
CORAL GABLES, Fla. –The Boston College volleyball team (15-6, 6-2 ACC) prevented a comeback attempt from Miami (8-8, 4-4 ACC), forcing five sets and earning their first win over the Hurricanes since 2007 on Sunday afternoon at the Knight Sports Complex. The win marks the first-ever over Miami on the road and snaps an 18-match losing streak in the series for BC.
Â
The team hit at a .253 percentage to Miami's .183, led by a double-double from sophomore Jewel Strawberry with 18 kills and 12 digs. Junior Clare Naughton followed behind Strawberry with 14 kills and a .324 clip on the day.  Senior Carly Kutschke paced with an error-free .444 hitting percentage, tallying four kills off of nine attempts and adding a team-best four blocks. On the service line, it was Strawberry again who recorded a career-best with four aces on the day while Makenzie Morrison followed closely behind with three.Â
Â
Defensively, Strawberry's 12 digs matched with senior Jane DeJarld for team-best while freshman libero Torey Baum added 10. The Eagles combined for 16 blocks as Kutschke was joined by Strawberry, Cat Balido and Amaka Chukwujekwu who each added three in the comeback win effort.Â
Â
With the win, the Eagles match their 15-win record set last year and surpass their all-time ACC win record with six conference wins so far this season. So far in 2019, BC is a perfect 5-0 in five set matches, having already topped UConn, Harvard, Rhode Island and Georgia Tech with 3-2 decisions.Â

HOW IT HAPPENED
Set 1 –The Eagles earned the first four points of the match, led by back-to-back aces from Strawberry. The team pushed their lead to 9-5 before rallying for four straight points, extending their advantage to 13-9. The teams traded points before a mid-set rally from Miami brought the Hurricanes within three at 17-14, but not before BC answered back with three points of their own to find a 20-14 advantage. The home team would only add two more points before the Eagles took the opening set off of three straight points, 25-16.
Set 2 –Miami found their footing and stormed to an 8-1 lead early. The teams traded points before the Eagles added four straight to cut their deficit to three at 12-9. A late run by the Hurricanes brought them up 21-15 and sealed the deal, as Miami evened the match after a BC service error, 25-19.
Set 3 –The middle set began evenly matched, finding a tie at 6-all before Miami pushed to a 9-6 lead. BC added one back but Miami added another three to further their advantage to 12-7. The Eagles added six of the next seven points to find just a two-point deficit. The teams traded back-and-forth before BC added four straight to tie the set at 21-21. The Hurricanes capped the win after adding four of the final six points, finalized with a kill from Kennedy Prince, 25-23.
Set 4 –Similar to the previous set, the teams met at a 6-point tie before the Hurricanes pushed for a two-point lead. Each team contributed back-and-forth two-point rallies before BC added four straight to go up, 16-14. Miami answered right back with three of their own to regain the lead before allowing BC to tie it at 17-17. Fighting back, Miami tallied another four to take a 21-17 lead. After trading points, the Eagles rallied to add five straight points to go up once again, 24-23. Extra points were needed as a kill from Kutschke earned the set for BC, 28-26, to even the match.
Set 5 –An early run brought BC a lead they would never relinquish, finding themselves up 6-2 to start the deciding set. Only allowing six more points for Miami, the Eagles tallied four straight to end the set and win the match, 15-8.
