The volleyball team looks to build on their success as they host Virginia and Pitt this weekend
CHESTNUT HILL, Mass – The Boston College volleyball team (13-4, 4-0 ACC) wraps up their two-week home stretch this weekend, welcoming Virginia and No. 3 Pitt to the Heights. Friday's match is set to begin at 7:30 PM while Sunday's match will start at 2:30 PM. Both contests will be featured on the ACC Network Extra.
Last weekend, the Eagles opened up Power Gym for the first time in 2019 with a statement, taking 3-1 wins over both Duke and Wake Forest. The defeat of Duke marked just the second time in program history that BC has earned a win over the Blue Devils, and the first time in their home gym while 3-1 final result snapped an eight-game loss streak in the series. Junior Amaka Chukwujekwu was the hero of the day, hitting a match-best .591 with 15 kills with 22 total points and seven blocks. She recorded two block solos for the third time this season to her season-best.
On Sunday, Clare Naughton shined against the Demon Deacons, as the junior tallied a career-best 19 kills, adding 10 digs for a double-double. The Atlanta, Ga. native aced four serves and recorded four blocks while hitting at a .349 clip on the day. The weekend pushed the Eagles to 4-0 in conference play for the first time in program history, just one win short of their entire 2018 season ACC win total.
The Cavaliers (9-8, 1-3 ACC) are led by freshman Mattison Matthews who has put up a .396 hitting percentage while Jelena Novakovic has a team-best 180 kills. Leading digger Kelsey Miller fell victim to an injury in Virginia's loss to Florida State, but has since been substituted with junior Alex Spencer. Last season, the Eagles met the Cavaliers twice and split the season with a 2-3 loss in Charlottesville before a 3-0 win in Chestnut Hill to wrap up BC's home slate. Naughton led the offensive pace during both matches, tallying 16 kills on the road and 12 kills at home. Virginia holds a 17-5 all-time record over the Eagles, with four of BC's five wins occurring in Power Gym.
The Panthers (15-1, 4-0 ACC) hold the best record and highest national ranking in the ACC, as the team has skyrocketed from debuting at No. 12 nationally to earning the third place spot after posting a 15-1 record. Pitt's Layne Van Buskirk holds the fourth-best spot in the conference with a .374 hitting percentage, two rankings behind BC's Chukwujekwu's .427 clip. The Eagles have only topped Pitt once in their 26 meetings, dating back to 1990. The win was a five-set battle in Chestnut Hill in 2000.
Friday evening's match will mark the annual Dig Pink match for breast cancer awareness while Sunday will be featured as Youth Day.
