Taylor Soule scores season-high 18 points in loss.
Â
SOUTH BEND, Ind. – Freshman Taylor Soule had a season-high 18 points but it was not enough as Boston College lost to No. 1 Notre Dame, 92-63, on Sunday afternoon at the Purcell Pavilion.
The Eagles dropped to 13-6 and 2-4 in the ACC, while Notre Dame improved to 18-1 and 6-0 in the conference.
Soule finished the game shooting 5-for-6 from the floor and 8-for-10 from the foul line for 18 points. She also pitched in with five rebounds and three assists. Freshman Makayla Dickens added 12 points, five rebounds and five assists, while sophomore Sydney Lowery had eight points and three boards off the bench.
The young Eagles battled the Irish early as Dickens hit three three-pointers in the first four minutes and BC was down just one points, 15-14. Notre Dame took advantage of five BC turnovers and turned it into a 19-5 to end the quarter, 32-19.
Soule sparked the Eagles with six points early in the quarter to stay within nine points of the Irish. BC was hurt when Emma Guy (8 points) picked up her third foul with a little over six minutes to play in the quarter. The Irish started to pull away when Marina Mabrey (14 points) hit two three-pointers to extend the Notre Dame lead, 43-25. The two teams exchanged hoops in the final three minutes as the Irish took a 49-34 lead at intermission.
The Eagles came out strong at the start of the third quarter and cut the lead to 11 points behind a bucket from Guy followed by two free throws from Soule. A Brianna Turner layup at 6:34 pushed the Notre Dame lead to 15 points but BC responded with a jumper at the top of the key from Marnelle Garraud. That would be the closest BC would get. Notre Dame took a 17 point lead into the final quarter on an 8-4 run in the final minutes.
In the fourth quarter, Notre Dame opened up with a 16-5 run behind eight points from Jackie Young (13 points, 10 rebounds). The Irish never looked back at the lead grew to 30 with three minutes to play.
Notre Dame had had five players in double-figures, including 24 points from Arike Ogunbowale and 18 points and 13 rebounds from Jackie Young. Jessica Shepherd pitched in with 11 points and 10 boards.
