The field hockey team rallied from behind to force double-overtime and defeat the Demon Deacons
NEWTON, Mass.:Â The No. 13 Boston College field hockey team forced their second consecutive double-overtime game of the season as senior Frederique Haverhals found the game-winner to lift the Eagles over conference foe Wake Forest, 4-3, Friday evening in Newton.
The Eagles found the lead early in the first stanza as senior captain Lucy Lytle tipped the ball in from the left corner, just 6:04 into the game. Wake Forest's Jule Grashoff evened the score at 24:36 off of a corner shot while freshman Eva Van de Mierop was sitting for a green card.Â
The Demon Deacons found the tie breaker early in the second half with a player-up advantage, as Eleanor Winants' tip-in made it past junior goalkeeper Sarah Dwyer 44:01 into the game. Senior Elizabeth Dennehy was sitting for a green card during the goal. Wake Forest grabbed another score as Anne van Hoof capitalized on a corner shot, pushing their lead to 3-1 just two minutes later.
The Eagles began their rally from behind, starting with a goal from graduate student Brooke Matherson from right out in front of the net at 54:26 into the game. Sophomore Elizabeth Warner pushed the team to force overtime, 60:38 into the game with a fast break and a tip-in.Â
The first overtime period saw little action. As time in the second overtime frame was trickling down, the Eagles were given a corner opportunity. While the initial opportunity was unsuccessful, Boston College forced a second one to follow, where Haverhals found her third goal of the season and grabbed the rebound off of the corner to win the game.Â
