OVERLAND PARK, Kan. – Thirty NCAA Football Bowl Subdivision student-athletes, who excel both on and off the field, were selected this week as candidates for the 2018 Senior CLASS Award in collegiate football. Boston College senior defensive end Zach Allen earned inclusion on the list, which will be narrowed down to 10 finalists midway through the regular season.
Â
To be eligible for the award, a student-athlete must be classified as a NCAA Division I FBS senior and have notable achievements in four areas of excellence: community, classroom, character and competition. An acronym for Celebrating Loyalty and Achievement for Staying in School, the Senior CLASS Award focuses on the total student-athlete and encourages students to use their platform to make a positive impact as leaders in their communities.
Â
Allen, who was also named a semifinalist for the 2018 William V. Campbell Trophy for the best scholar-athlete in college football, was one of just two defensive linemen nationally to reach 100 tackles during the 2017 season. He finished with 100 tackles and six sacks. A standout in the classroom, Allen has a 3.7 GPA as a finance major in the Carroll School of Management.
Â
Through four games this season, Allen has 15 tackles, 3.5 TFLs and 1.5 sacks. He has also recovered a fumble and been credited with one pass breakup and five quarterback hurries.
Â
To determine the final Senior CLASS Award winner, the 30 candidates will be pared down to 10 finalists and those names will be placed on the official ballot. Ballots will be distributed through a nationwide voting system to media, coaches and fans, who will select one candidate who best exemplifies excellence in the four Cs of community, classroom, character and competition.
Â
The Senior CLASS Award winner will be announced during the football bowl season in early January.
