September 21, 2018 | Field Hockey
Graduate student Brooke Matherson recorded one goal and one assist in the 2-0 shutout win for the Eagles
NEWTON, Mass. – The No. 9 Boston College field hockey team remains undefeated at home after defeating conference foe and 10th-ranked Virginia, 2-0, Friday evening in Newton. Junior goalkeeper Sarah Dwyer recorded her third shutout of the season with the win.
The Eagles stayed dominant in the offensive zone throughout the beginning of the first half. While Virginia had many opportunities to bring the ball into their zone, the Eagles held a strong force regaining control. Jaime Natale and Elizabeth warner had solid shots but couldn't get past goalkeeper Carrera Lucas. The Cavaliers pulled the only corner of the first half, but the shot was blocked.
The first half ended at a 0-0 knot, which is the seventh time this season that the Eagles were stuck in a tie at halftime.
Virginia pulled another corner to open the second half but couldn't make it past Dwyer. The Eagles' first corner opportunity was blocked, as well.Â
Senior captain Ymke Rose Gote had a promising breakaway chance, but the tip-in was unsuccessful and resulted in a defensive save for the Cavaliers.Â
Sophomore Elizabeth Warner opened up the scoring with 11 minutes remaining in regulation. Putting the Eagles on the board first after a long wait, Warner tapped the ball in off of a pass from graduate student Brooke Matherson. The goal was Warner's third of the year.
Matherson secured the win for the Eagles with her fourth goal of the season with an empty-netter with 1:43 remaining in regulation. The Eagles are now 5-3 overall and 2-1 in ACC play.
