The field hockey team wraps up long week with home tilts against Virginia and New Hampshire
CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. --Â The No. 9 Boston College field hockey team prepares for a tough weekend after finding a win at cross-town foe Northeastern Tuesday evening, 2-1. Sophomore Fusine Govaert recorded the first goal for the Eagles as they headed into the second half with a 1-1 knot. Classmate Cassidy Atchison's tiebreaker came towards the end of regulation and secured their fourth win.
Govaert grabbed her fourth goal of the season during the win at Northeastern, securing her spot at the top of the Eagles' scoring chart. Her four goals and one assist totals her at nine points so far, just one point above graduate student Brooke Matherson (3 g, 2 a) and two above senior captain Frederique Haverhals (3 g, 1 a). Junior goalkeeper Sarah Dwyer, who earned ACC Defensive Player of the Week honors earlier in the season, heads into the weekend with a 1.29 GAA and 20 saves over six games.
The Eagles will face off with conference opponent No. 10 Virginia Friday at 6 p.m. Ranked at neighboring spots in the NFHCA poll, the Cavaliers have bested the Eagles 11 times over their 18 matchups since 2003. Virginia has also shown their strength in the postseason, having knocked Boston College out of the ACC Tournament in each of their three postseason meetings. The Eagles have won three of their last five games, two of which needed overtime to decide a winner. The Cavaliers are led by Grace Wallis, who has four goals and four assists so far this season. Goalkeeper Carrera Lucas heads into the conference matchup with a 1.30 GAA and 33 saves.
On Sunday, the Eagles will host the Wildcats for a 1 p.m. non-conference regular season game. Currently with an overall 1-5 record, New Hampshire has yet to face a conference opponent in the 2018 season. A regional rival, the Eagles have won all but two of their 17 meetings since 2000. The Wildcats are led by junior Nicky Bajus, who has recorded one goal, one assist and 17 shots on the season. Four other Wildcats also have one goal – Tia Raspante, Isabelle Danahy, Bailey Fanikos, and Finn Caron, twin sister of freshman Eagle Sky Caron.
