Late Goal Allows No. 7 Louisville to Sneak Past BC
September 14, 2018 | Men's Soccer
The 80th minute tally gave the Cardinals a 1-0 win
NEWTON, Mass. – The Boston College men's soccer team battled No. 7 Louisville evenly on Friday night but the Cardinals used an 80th minute goal to squeak out a 1-0 win at the Newton Campus Fields.
Louisville opened the game with intensity but the Eagles did well to answer back and create their own opportunities. Ryo Kinoshita had a wide shot with seven minutes gone and then two minutes later, earned a dangerous free kick to the right of Antonio Chavez Borrelli. On the kick, Abe Bibas headed the service in and then the ball was cleared out of danger.
It was Bibas on the other end in the 20th minute with the bicycle kick effort on a throw-in service from Joe Kellett. The game became chippy after that, with two yellow cards issued in two minutes to the Cardinals – but BC's free-kick from 20 yards out did not produce a lead, with Kristofer Konradsson's shot hitting the crossbar and deflecting down just ahead of the line.
The second half saw the teams trade corner kicks but nothing more. Chavez Borrelli's key punch on one of the Cardinals' attempts was vital to keeping it scoreless. Konradsson had a shot blocked with 15 minutes to play after some nice work by Carlos Dulcey to get him the ball. Callum Johnson tried to test Jake Geinovatch from distance but the shot pushed wide.
After the Cardinals went up, 1-0, with 10 minutes to play, Simon Enstrom went immediately back the other way after the ensuing kickoff and had a great look off of a feed from Johnson. The senior's shot pushed to the right of the post, though, and Ivan Postolka's long look in the waning minutes was saved by Jake Geinovatch.
The Eagles held the final edge in shot attempts (8-7) while the Cardinals had the lead in corner kicks (5-1). Though he did not register a save, Chavez Borrelli was key in defending the corners. Geinovatch finished with one save for Louisville.
Boston College returns to action on Tuesday, Sept. 17, when the team travels to Storrs, Conn. to take on the Connecticut Huskies in a non-conference match. The teams will kick off at 7 p.m.
