Mitchell Scores Game-Winner vs. No. 21 Texas Tech
September 01, 2018 | Women's Soccer
Eagles defeat Texas Tech, 1-0, to stay undefeated
NEWTON, Mass. – The Boston College women's soccer team defeated previously undefeated No. 21 Texas Tech, 1-0, behind a first half goal by Gianna Mitchell on Saturday night in a non-conference game at the Newton Soccer Field on Saturday night.
Boston College is now 6-0 and will travel down the road to play BU on Thursday. Texas Tech dropped to 4-1 and will host Florida International on Friday.
Sophomore Gianna Mitchell scored her fifth goal of the season when she connected with Sam Coffey on the Eagles second corner kick of the game. Mitchell got her head on a ball that was served in the box by Coffey in the ninth minute of the match.
The BC goal awoke the Red Raiders as they went pressed forward throughout the rest of the half. Texas Tech's speed and aggressive play was matched the Eagles defense that continually cleared any attempt the Red Raiders had in getting off a solid threat.
In the second half, the game was like an old boxing match. Each team took punches and countered but neither team could put the ball in the back of the net.
BC's defense – Rachel Newborough, Gianna Mitchell, Kayla Duran, Erin Convery and Elysa Virella – prevented any dangerous balls in the box with their aggressive play. BC goalkeeper Alexis Bryant was active and had a season-high five saves in the win. It was her sixth win and fourth shutout of the season.
Junior Jenna Bike led the Eagles offense with three shots, while Sam Coffey had two shots.
