Sam Coffey's Two Goals Powers Eagles Over UConn
August 26, 2018 | Women's Soccer
NEWTON, Mass. – Sophomore Sam Coffey scored two goals to lead Boston College past former conference rival Connecticut, 2-0, in a non-conference on Sunday afternoon in front of 584 fans at the Newton Soccer Field.
Boston College improved to 4-0 and will host Stony Brook on Wednesday at 5 p.m. UConn is now 1-3 and will host Rutgers on Thursday night.
Coffey opened the scoring when she ripped a low shot from 22 yards out off a free kick to give BC a 1-0 lead in the 33rd minute of play. BC carried the play most of the first half and finished the half, with a 7-2 edge in shots, three from Coffey.
The second half, UConn pushed back, pressuring the Eagles, as the Huskies started to win 50-50 balls. UConn had a flurry of corner kicks early in the half but the Eagles defense easily handled the pressure.
In the 64th minute, BC put together a beautiful combination as Coffey switched fields and found Gaby Carreiro. The Eagles redshirt junior forward sent Vaughn into the box, but her shot just went wide.
Minutes later in the 72nd minute, Coffey connected with fellow sophomore Riley Lochhead. The two put together a give-and-go, with Coffey ripping a shot high and into the far corner from 22 yards out for a 2-0 BC lead. It was Lochhead's first career point.
Alexis Bryant picked up her fourth win with three saves in the match.
