Mitchell's Two Goals Leads Eagles Past Albany, 5-0
August 23, 2018 | Women's Soccer
Sam Coffey tallies a goal and three assists in 5-0 win over Albany
Boston College sophomore Gianna Mitchell scored two goals, while second-year midfielder Sam Coffey tallied a goal and three assists in the Eagles 5-0 victory over Albany on Thursday night at the Newton Soccer Field. Boston College improved to 3-0 in non-conference play, while Albany is now 2-1.
Mitchell is coming off a game-winning goal against Northeastern on Sunday. The BC defender now has three goals this season, all headers off corner kicks.
Coffey opened the scoring when she ripped a shot from 24 yards out past a diving goalkeeper for a 1-0 BC lead just 12 minutes into the game.
After scoring Coffey started to set up her teammates. Olivia Vaughn scored her third goal of the season when Coffey sent the ball into the box. Vaughn turned and placed a shot into the far corner that deflected off the keepers' hands for a 2-0 lead in the 24th minute.
Coffey then connected with Gianna Mitchell on a corner kick to push the Eagles lead to 3-0 in the 31st minute. Four minutes later, the tandem connected on another corner kick and BC took a 4-0 lead into halftime.
BC held a 22-5 edge in shots for the game. The Eagles also had 11 corners, converted on two and gave up just two corner kicks to Albany.
Albany's only threat came 20 minutes into the game when Maria Williams (two shots) broke free and sent a low shot to Alexis Bryant's right. The Eagles senior goalkeeper dove and preserved the 1-0 lead in the first half. Freshman Maddie Murphy saw her first collegiate action in the second half. She made a save in the second half to keep the Great Danes off the scoring column.
