Fourth Annual Comm Ave. Classic Set for Friday
August 22, 2018 | Men's Hockey
Annual event has raised for $110,000 for Compassionate Care ALS
CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. – Boston College and Boston University will renew the Green Line Rivalry on Friday night when two teams brimming with star-studded alumni take to the ice for the Fourth Annual Comm Ave. Charity Classic at Walter Brown Arena.
Â
All proceeds from the game will benefit Compassionate Care ALS, in honor of Ron Perryman, Pete Frates, Dick Kelley and all those affected by Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) as well as the Travis Roy Foundation. Last year's event, which saw the Terriers edge the Eagles, 8-6, to take a lead in the overall series at 2-1, raised a record-breaking amount of $64,481 to bring the three-year total to over $110,000.
This year's rosters feature four Stanley Cup Champions, four Hobey Baker Award winners, three NHL All-Stars, two NHL All-Rookie Team honorees, and 12 first round NHL Draft picks. In all, 21 Eagles and 14 Terriers are slated to strap on their skates for this year's game. Harvard's Ryan Donato and Jimmy Vesey along with Northeastern's Adam Gaudette, the 2018 winner of the Hobey Baker Award, will join in.
Â
The concept for the Comm Ave Charity Classic began in late 2014 when former Boston College Eagles' hockey captain, Pat Mullane, was inspired by Kelley, BC's own Sports Information Director, and his notable fight against ALS. Like many student-athletes at Boston College, Mullane was fortunate to develop a great friendship with Kelley, who served as mentor, role model, and most importantly a friend to everyone he met. Kelley lost his battle with ALS in February of 2014.
As the Boston College community mourned the death of Kelley, another Eagle continued his own battle with ALS. Former Boston College baseball captain Frates was diagnosed with ALS in March of 2012 and continues the fight. While their paths never crossed at BC, Mullane heard countless stories about Frates' passion for baseball, his family, and his friends.
Mullane teamed up with former Boston College hockey player Andrew Orpik '09 and manager Justin Murphy '09, who spent two years at BC with Frates and developed a friendship with Kelley, to initiate the first annual Comm Ave Charity Classic.
