August 19, 2018 | Women's Soccer
Eagles improve to 2-0 with a 1-0 win over the Huskies.
BROOKLINE, Mass. – Boston College sophomore Gianna Mitchell scored her first goal of the season to lead the Eagles past in-state rival Northeastern, 1-0, on Sunday afternoon at Parsons Field. Boston College improved to 2-0 in non-conference play, while Northeastern is now 1-1.
Mitchell, a native of Springfield, scored in the 76th minutes off when she headed great set up from sophomore Sam Coffey. Not only was it Mitchell's first goal of the season, but Coffey's first assist.
After a scoreless first half, Boston College came alive in the second half.
The Eagles applied pressure and kept it up throughout the half. The Eagles first threat came off pressure right outside the box as Gaby Carreiro and Coffey worked a solid give-and-go. The ball bounced around and landed in the area of junior Olivia Vaughn. She tried to chip if over the Northeastern goalkeeper Nathalie Nidetch from 18 yards out, but just went high of the crossbar. Three minutes later, Coffey had a crack from 24 yards out that went wide right of the NU keeper.
Junior Jenna Bike made a solid run off a long ball from Coffey. She slid and got her foot on the ball which just missed the near post in the 61st minute of play.
The Eagles finally broke through when Coffey sent a corner kick to the near post. Mitchell out-jumped the NU keeper for the ball and headed it to the near corner for the 1-0 lead.
Graduate goalkeeper Alexis Bryant came up big twice to preserve the lead with just under 10 to play. NU's Mikenna McManus broke in between two BC defenders and found herself alone in the box. Bryant made herself big and made a kick save, and covered up the rebound. With just over three minutes, Bryant dove to her left off a low shot from 10 yards out from Northeastern's Kerri Zerfoss. Bryant made three saves in the match for her second win of the season.
