BC will be represented by a quintet of present and past Eagles at the USA Hockey Women’s National Festival
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Five current Boston College women's hockey players, along with recent graduate Katie Burt ('18), have been invited to the USA Hockey Women's National Festival in Lake Placid, N.Y., as announced Friday by USA Hockey.
Â
Burt will join former teammates Cayla Barnes, Kali Flanagan, Megan Keller, Caitrin Lonergan and Makenna Newkirk as part of the 75 total players invited to the camp. The trio of Barnes, Flanagan and Keller were most recently members of the gold-medal winning U.S. National Team at the 2018 Olympics in PyeongChang while Burt and Newkirk all attended the U.S. National Team selection camp last spring. All six Eagles were participants in the 2016 Women's National Team Festival, which was the last edition of the festival prior to the Olympic break.  Â
Â
The Festival, which takes place Aug. 6-13, is a training session that will also be used to select two 22-player rosters for a pair of series against Canada that will be held simultaneously from Aug. 14-19 in Calgary, Alberta. The U.S. entries will feature an Under-18 Select Team and Under-22 Select Team. A total of 31 U-18 players were selected for the Festival. A complete roster (42 forwards, 26 defensewomen and seven goaltenders) and schedule are available here.Â
Â
Barnes skated in five games for the Eagles to start the 2017-18 season but was called into the U.S. National Team in late October. Barnes, who was the youngest member of the 2018 Olympic team, played in all five games en route to a gold medal. Flanagan played 77 shifts at the Olympics across all five games while Keller led all U.S. players in shifts in PyeongChang, hitting the ice 152 times and recorded two assists.
Â
Newkirk finished the 2017-18 season ranked sixth nationally among Division I players in scoring, posting a career-high 61 points. She potted 24 goals while her career-high 37 assists were fifth most in the country. Newkirk, who scored six game-winning goals to finish tied sixth nationally, opened the year with a 17-game point streak, putting up 27 points on nine goals and 18 assists over that span.
Â
Lonergan finished her sophomore campaign with 75 points on 30 goals and 45 assists, finishing second in the nation to teammate Daryl Watts. Her 45 helpers tied the single-season program record while her points and assists total were BC sophomore records. Lonergan registered multiple points in 25 of the team's 38 games and strung together a career-high 16-game point streak during which she posted 38 points on 16 goals and 22 assists.
Â
As a senior in 2017-18, Burt went 30-5-3 while posting a 1.95 goals against average, .933 save percentage and four shutouts. The four-year starter led the nation with a career-high 1,038 saves and was third with a career-high 2305:23 minutes played. Burt finished her career among the NCAA leaders in every career category, finishing first overall in career wins (121), fifth in career winning percentage (.863) and in career shutouts (35), tied ninth in career goals against average (1.47), 12th in career saves (3,180) and tied 13th in career save percentage (.937).
