BC fencing takes Women’s Team Coaching Staff of the Year among other honors
CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. – The women's fencing coaching staff of Syd Fadner and Brendan Doris-Pierce was named the 2018 Women's Team Coaching Staff of the Year for the 2017-18 season, the Northeast Fencing Conference announced Monday evening. Sophomore Connor Rounds was named Fencer of the Year and freshman Justin Herman was tabbed Rookie of the Year.
The Women's Team Coaching Staff of the Year award is selected by the coaches at the annual meeting and it is designed to reflect the contribution of the entire coaching staff. This year marks the second year in a row that the BC women's coaching staff has been given the award. Fadner has also received the award in 2015 and 2012. With an 11-1 season record, Boston College women tied Brown University for the women's team title, and with a combined 19 victories, Boston College ties with Brandeis University for the combined team title.
Rounds, who posted a 27-3 record in men's sabre, received the Fencer of the Year award that is given to the top male and female fencer in the conference. This is the best record among all men across all weapons this season. To be eligible for Fencer of the Year, a fencer must fence in a minimum of two thirds of the scheduled bouts in the season. The winners are those with the highest winning percentage, with indicators being the tie-breaker.
Herman, who posted a 26-4 record in men's foil, which is the best record by any male rookie in the conference across all weapons, was awarded the Rookie of the Year honor that is given to the top male and female fencers in the conference who are freshman at the conclusion of the season. To qualify, a fencer must participate in a minimum of two thirds of the scheduled bouts in the season and finish with the highest winning percentage.
Rounds and Herman have earned First Team All Star honors, as well. Joining them as First Team All Stars are junior Cameron Mayer (24-6) in men's foil, and classmate Laura Donovan (29-3) in women's sabre. Earning Second Team All Star honors are sophomore Brooke Solsky (25-7) in women's foil), senior Ella Morgan (23-5) in women's epee, and freshman Ben Slavin (24-6) in men's sabre.
