Martellini Named to Johnny Bench Award Watch List

The junior has thrown out five runners stealing
CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. – Boston College junior catcher Gian Martellini was named to the Johnny Bench Award Watch List, the Greater Wichita Area Sports Commission announced on Tuesday evening. The watch list is made up of 97 catchers nominated by coaches around NCAA baseball.

The award is given annually to the top Division I collegiate catcher. The watch list will be narrowed down to the semifinalists, announced on May 16. Ballots will be sent to the national voting panel at the end of May for a vote to determine the three finalists. The finalists will be announced on June 4. A final vote among the national committee will occur during the College World Series. All finalists will be brought to Wichita and the winner will be announced at the 21st Annual Greater Wichita Sports Banquet on June 28.

Martellini leads the ACC with five runners caught stealing. He has also picked off one also been part of two double plays. He has made one error in 94 chances in the young season. In 10 games this season, the Johnston, R.I., native has recorded 10 hits, including two doubles, four runs and six RBIs.

The Eagles (5-5) take on Wofford at noon at Fluor Field in Greenville, S.C., before opening ACC play on Friday at NC State.
