Final practice in helmets before the Eagles put on the pads March 13
CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. – The Boston College football team completed its second practice of the spring in helmets Thursday morning inside Alumni Stadium. It marked the final practice for Boston College before spring break.
Â
With nine returning starters on the offensive side of the ball, it has been clear that the Eagles will go into 2018 with plenty of talented weapons.
Â
"Yes, it's different, which is great," offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach Scot Loeffler said about how the offense is ahead of schedule. "Even from the end of the year, these guys have really bought into the fact to learn and compete and play every day like we're trying to win something in the off-season. That's what they're doing and that's a great sign. These guys have kind of tasted it, they got a feel for what it's supposed to look like when they're trying to upgrade, which is really cool."
Â
Any good team better have a strong offensive line and the Eagles should boast one of the nation's best units in 2018.
Â
"It's great," Loeffler said on the returning talent on the offensive line. "You look at these guys, and the first couple years when they were young, it was like looking at guys who were just trying to survive. And now you look at them and they're competitive, they're juiced. They know what to, they're confident. Coach Addazio has done a great job getting the right guys in here and they've done a great job developing that room, so it's very encouraging."
Â
The quarterbacks will be under the spotlight in the spring as last year's starter Anthony Brown recovers from a knee injury. Despite the temporary setback, Loeffler sees it as a positive for the entire quarterbacks room.
Â
"It's good in my mind that we're able to let other guys play," Loeffler said. "We're trying to let a lot of guys play right now, which is great for their development. We're trying to build. We're so young in that room, Anthony is the old guy really, and he's only really played one year. We're still really young, so it's great to get these guys reps that they normally wouldn't have got with a starting quarterback. We got a long way to go in that room but today we saw some things that made me a little encouraged."
Â
Sophomore EJ Perry, redshirt freshman Matt McDonald, senior John Fadule and redshirt freshman Dennis Grosel all got the chance under center over the first two practices this spring.
 Â
Practice Notes: One of the benefits of the spring is to get an extended look at some of the younger players in the program. After two practices, sophomore defensive end Brandon Barlow and sophomore defensive end Bryce Morais received all of the reps with the first team defense … junior Tanner Karafa has earned the first snaps at defensive tackle alongside senior Ray Smith following two practices … head coach Steve Addazio will be on Sirius NFL Radio channel 88 tonight from 6-7 p.m. at the NFL Combine in Indianapolis. BC has three players at this year's combine – defensive end Harold Landry and cornerbacks Kamrin Moore and Isaac Yiadom … two wide receivers who stood out during team periods Thursday were sophomore CJ Lewis and redshirt freshman Noah Jordan-Williams. Williams caught three straight during a series with EJ Perry under center, including an incredible one-handed catch that was the play of the day. Lewis also made a leaping grab in traffic on a nice ball thrown by Matt McDonald … senior safety Will Harris showed great range on a pass breakup over the middle on a pass attended for senior tight end Tommy Sweeney.
