Eagles and Terriers will face off for the 40th Women's Beanpot
CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. – On Tuesday night, the Battle of Comm. Ave., will also be the Battle for the Beans.
Â
The fourth-ranked Boston College women's hockey team will host arch rival Boston University in the championship game of the 40th Women's Beanpot on Tuesday, Feb. 13. Faceoff between the Eagles and Terriers is set for 7:30 p.m. at BC's Kelley Rink at Conte Forum.
Â
Tickets for the game are available for $10 for adults, $5 for students/seniors and free students and staff of the four participating schools with a valid college ID. The game will be streamed live on ESPN3, which is available at WatchESPN.com and on the ESPN app.
Â
Boston College (25-3-3) punched its ticket to the final last Tuesday after its 5-2 win over Northeastern in the first round. Led by Makenna Newkirk's hat trick, Daryl Watts' two goals and two assists apiece from Toni Ann Miano and Kenzie Kent, BC advanced to its sixth-straight championship game performance.
Â
The Eagles have won the last two Beanpots (2016 and 2017) and three of the last four. Overall, Boston College has won the last three Beanpots played at Kelley Rink - 2007, 2011, 2014 – and come into Tuesday's championship game with an eight-game home winning streak in the tournament dating back to 2004.
Â
Boston University (11-14-6) advanced to its first championship game since 2012 with a 3-2 win over Harvard last Tuesday in the first round. The Terriers scored three goals in the first 6:09 of the game, including two from Victoria Bach, before the Crimson started their comeback behind goals from Brooke Jovanovich and Chelsea Ziadie. However, BU goaltender Corinne Schroeder stopped all eight shots in the third period – including heavy action during an extended 6-on-5 advantage late in the game – to push BU through.
Â
Tuesday's game marks the third championship game meeting between the Eagles and Terriers, and the first in more than a decade.
Â
The teams first met in the 1981 title game, with BU winning its only Beanpot ever behind a 4-0 win down Comm. Ave. They next met 26 years later at Kelley Rink, with the Eagles taking a 6-1 win in the 2007 championship tilt.
Â
Boston College and Boston University have already completed their three-game Hockey East series, with BC taking a 2-0-1 series win. The Eagles won both games at Walter Brown Arena, a 4-3 win on Oct. 28, and a 4-2 victory on Dec. 2. The teams played to a 2-2 draw at Kelley Rink on Dec. 1.
Â
All-time, BC owns a 27-17-7 advantage in the series. The Eagles are 3-0-2 in the last five meetings and 8-1-2 since Boston University topped BC, 4-1, in the 2015 Hockey East Championship game.
Â
After her hat trick against Northeastern, Newkirk has pushed her career Beanpot point total to 12 points from six goals and six assists. She has four three-point games in five 'Pot games so far.
Â
Following Tuesday's Beanpot championship game, the Eagles will hit the road to close out the 2017-18 regular season. BC will travel to Maine for a pair of games this weekend. The Eagles and Black Bears will meet at 2 p.m. on both Friday, Feb. 16, and Saturday, Feb., 17. Both games will be played at Alfond Arena.
