CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. -- Chris Herren Jr. and Wynston Tabbs scored 22 and 20 points, respectively, as Boston College improved to 8-2 on the season with a 77-67 win over Fairfield on Sunday afternoon.
The Eagles were playing without starters Jordan Chatman and Steffon Mitchell, who missed the game due to injury. Chatman ranks third and Mitchell 25th, respectively in the ACC in minutes played.
Fairfield scored the first basket of the game before BC ripped off nine straight points to take a 9-2 lead at the first media break. The Stags would cut it to one - 14-13 - 5:10 later, on the heels of an 11-5 push. Fairfield led by two - 31-29 - with 2:21 remaining in the half, but Tabbs and Herren combined to score the final five points of the half. The Eagles would lead 34-31 at the break and would not trail the rest of the way.
A 15-5 Boston College run to start the second half extended its lead to 13, at 49-36, less than five minutes into the period. Thirteen of the 15 points during the run were scored by freshmen, as Herren Jr., Tabbs, and Jairus Hamilton carried the offensive load.
But Fairfield's 3-point shooting kept it close, cutting the BC lead to four points - 71-67 - with just under two minutes to play. The Stags connected on 14 3-pointers - seven each half. But the Eagles would score the final six points of the game to seal the win - on a dunk from Nik Popovic and four Ky Bowman free throws.
