Eagles Down URI, 88-64, in Season Opener

Coach Mac earns a win over URI in BC debut.
KINGSTON, R.I. - Â It's a new era for Boston College women's basketball and a new brand of basketball. The Eagles defeated Rhode Island, 88-62, in a track meet at the Ryan Center in a non-conference game on Thursday night. BC is now 1-0, while URI is 0-1.

Boston College took an early 7-4 lead just five minutes into the first quarter as Taylor Ortlepp hit two three-pointers to spark the offense. After the first timeout, BC pushed the lead to 14-6 behind a jumper in the paint by Marnelle Garraud. After the first quarter, the Eagles led, 21-10.

BC pulled away from the Rams in the second quarter as the Eagles shot 61 percent from the floor (11-for-18) and disrupted URI's offense with the pressure defense. BC outscored URI, 28-13 in the quarter as the Eagles hit six three-pointers, two from Ortlepp and two from freshman Makayla Dickens.

BC shot 44 percent in the half, tallied nine steals and forced 13 first half turnovers.
The lead extended to 31 points as BC opened the half with an 11-6 run. Ortlepp hit her fifth three-pointer to open the second half and Taylor Soule had six points in the run. The Eagles held a 72-39 lead after three quarters.
Boston College forced 25 turnovers, had 13 steals and won the battle of the boards, 55-36, in the game.

- This was new head coach Joanna Bernabei-McNamee's debut.
- BC started three juniors – Emma Guy, Georgia Pineau and Taylor Ortlepp – along with two freshmen – Makayla Dickens and Taylor Soule.
- Freshman Marnelle Garraud finished with a team-high 19 points and four steals, while Dickens had 12 points, five assists and seven rebounds.
- Taylor Ortlepp hit five-for-10 from the three-point line and finished with 15 points, four assists and four rebounds.
- Emma Guy grabbed a team-high 10 boards to go along with nine points.
- Taylor Soule finished the game with 10 points, three rebounds and a steal.
- BC tied a Ryan Center record for most three-pointers made in a game with 13.
- The last time BC scored 88 points was Feb. 9 2017. The Eagles defeated the Tar Heels, 88-77, on the road.
