NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Three different Eagles were champions of their respective singles draws over the weekend at the Connecticut State Championship, hosted by Yale at the Cullman-Heyman Tennis Center.
Conor Mullins was the winner of the Marc Powers draw without losing a single set. The graduate student's dominant performance took him past Dartmouth's Sacha Pritzker (6-1, 6-2), Quinnipiac's Hielke Moore (6-3, 6-4), and Igor Maslov of St. John's (6-3, 6-1).
Santiago Montufar also claimed all three singles matches of his section in straight sets. Montufar bested UConn's Christian Provenzano (6-2, 6-3), Marist's Kian Yazdi (6-2, 6-2), and Fairfield's Arnas Sabonis (6-2, 7-6) to clinch the Jay Rossello Draw.
Chris Grasel won the Zach Dean draw, defeating UConn's Yili Zheng (6-3, 6-3) and Dartmouth's Sidd Chari (3-6, 6-4, 10-4) in the first two rounds. The Brazilian closed by narrowly edging Alan Nunez of St. John's in a tiebreaker 6-4, 3-6, 11-9.
Montufar combined with Max Mendelsohn to win the Brandon Wai Draw in doubles competition following three close matches. The duo worked its way past three different teams from UConn – Samuel/Provenzano (8-5), Warren/Flanagan (8-6), and Holtmann/Mclister (8-6) – to clinch the title.
Conor Mullins and Grasel nearly made it a BC doubles sweep, but lost to Yale's tandem of King and Sun 8-5 in the final match of the Tyler Lu Draw. Mullins and Grasel had previously beaten Quinnipiac's Stern and Moore 8-5 and Nunez/Crapcenco of St. John's 8-3.
Elsewhere in the singles competition, Derek Austin reached the final of the Daniel Hoffman Draw after straight set victories, but Yale's Michael Sun outlasted the junior in a tiebreaker 6-4, 3-6, 10-2 to win the draw.
Alexander Chieffalo was a winner over Fairfield's Jeff Rodgers 3-6, 6-3, 10-4 before dropping a tight match in a tiebreaker to Alester Magalit of Quinnipiac 6-2, 4-6, 10-5.
