Allen named University Division Gold Helmet Award winner.
CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Five Boston College players were named to the University Division All-New England Team by the New England Football Writers this week. Senior defensive end Zach Allen was honored by the NEFW with the 2018 University Division Gold Helmet Award, symbolic of the top Division I player in the region.
Â
Allen was joined on the All-New England Team by junior cornerback Hamp Cheevers, sophomore running back AJ Dillon, graduate tight end Tommy Sweeney and senior guard Chris Lindstrom. Cheevers, Dillon, Sweeney and Lindstrom all pulled in All-ACC first team recognition on Monday, while Allen was voted to the league's second team.
Â
For the season, Allen totaled 61 tackles, including 15.0 tackles for loss and 6.5 sacks. He added two fumble recoveries, an interception and blocked two kicks.
Â
Last week, Cheevers was honored as the Bulger Lowe Award winner for the top player in New England by the Gridiron Club of Greater Boston. He leads the country with seven interceptions; tied for the fourth most in a single season in BC history.
Â
Dillon rushed for over 1,000 yards for the second year in a row; becoming the first to do so in each of his first two seasons on the Heights. Sweeney was second on the team in receptions (32) and third in receiving yards (348) through 12 games. Lindstrom allowed zero sacks on the season and just three quarterback hurries.
Â
The All-New England Team will be honored at the New England Football Writers Captains and Awards Banquet on Thursday, Dec. 6 in Saugus, Mass.
