Cheevers Honored as New England Player of the Year

Allen, Addazio receive regional recognition from Gridiron Club of Greater Boston.
BOSTON – Junior cornerback Hamp Cheevers was named a winner of the 80th annual George "Bulger" Lowe Award, "New England's Heisman Trophy" by the Gridiron Club of Greater Boston College Awards committee chairman Tim Whelan on Tuesday. The award, one of America's oldest college football accolades, has been claimed by a Boston College player in each of the last four seasons.

The Bulger Lowe Award recognizes New England's best offensive and defensive players in the NCAA Bowl Subdivision/Football Championship Subdivision. Through week 11, Cheevers' seven interceptions lead the nation; he also has 135 return yards and one touchdown.

In the Eagles first game of the season against UMass, Cheevers forced and recovered a fumble. A week later against Holy Cross, he picked of his first pass of the season and returned it 81 yards, a career-best, for a touchdown. Cheevers has added interceptions against Wake Forest, Temple, Louisville, Miami, Clemson and Florida State.

BC senior defensive end Zach Allen was chosen as the FBS recipient of the 73rd annual Nils V. "Swede" Nelson Award for exceptional achievement in sportsmanship, academics and athletics. Allen, a two-time ACC Defensive Lineman of the Week this season and semifinalist for the Bednarik Award and Lott IMPACT Trophy, is fifth in the ACC with 14.5 tackles for loss and eighth with 6.5 sacks. He has blocked two kicks and recovered two fumbles, which rank first and third in the league, respectively.

Steve Addazio was selected as the winner of the FBS/FCS Head Coach of the Year honor. In his sixth season at the helm, Addazio has guided Boston College to a 7-4 record. The Eagles returned to the Top 25 for the first time since 2008, reaching as high as No. 14, appeared in the College Football Playoff rankings for the first time since the CFP was established in 2014 and hosted ESPN's College GameDay prior to their top-20 match-up with No. 2 Clemson on Nov. 10.

Massachusetts wide receiver Andy Isabella joined Cheevers as a recipient of the Bulger Lowe Award this season. All award winners will be honored at the club's annual Bob Whelan College Football Awards Night on Wednesday, Dec. 19 at the Marriott Hotel in Burlington, Mass.

Boston College is in action this week vs. Syracuse for a noon ET kickoff on Saturday, Nov. 24 at Alumni Stadium. The game will be televised by ESPN and aired across the BC IMG Sports Network, including 93.7 WEEI locally.
