Warriors Hold Off BC 2-1 in Hockey East Opener
November 02, 2018 | Men's Hockey
NORTH ANDOVER, Mass. – Logan Hutsko netted his first goal of the season to cut Merrimack's 2-0 lead in half, but the Warriors' two power play goals held up for a 2-1 victory in Boston College's Hockey East opener on Friday night at Lawler Arena.
Craig Pantano stopped 31 of the 32 shots he faced in the MC net for the victory. All three goals in the game were scored on the power play.
BC opened the night with nine shots on goal in the first five minutes but couldn't convert those chances into a goal.
Derek Petti followed a lively rebound off the end glass at 8:19 of the first period to give MC the lead. In the second, Tyler Heidt's center point shot deflected glove side on Joseph Woll (30 saves) through traffic to double the advantage at 12:56.
Hutsko put BC on the board in the closing minute of the middle frame as he came down ice on a 2-on-1 with Julius Mattila. The Finnish forward skated along the left side of the Merrimack zone before dishing a pass across the low slot for Hutsko, who buried a one-timer on his forehand past Pantano. Casey Fitzgerald collected the secondary assist on the play.
The Eagles continued to mount their comeback in the third but couldn't convert on a power play which carried over from intermission. BC pulled Woll with 1:20 left on the clock and the Warriors sealed the two points at home.
The shot (32-32) and faceoff (39-39) battles were dead even in the 99th meeting between the schools. Merrimack improved to 3-5-0 (2-2-0 HEA), while the Eagles fell to 0-5-0.
The teams close the home-and-home series on Saturday (Nov. 3) at 7 p.m. as it shifts to Kelley Rink for the 100th all-time matchup in series history.
