Haverhals' Hat Trick Leads Eagles to Comeback Win Over California
October 06, 2018 | Field Hockey
The senior's three goals lifted the team to a 4-3 win after being down 0-3
Junior Brigid Wood started the offensive momentum early, recording the first shot of the contest just 35 seconds after the starting whistle.
Â
Cal pushed its way to the scoreboard first after a Melina Moore goal in the 27th minute. Despite going into halftime with a one-goal deficit, the Eagles edged the Golden Bears as BC recorded four shots on goal to Cal's one over the first half.
Â
Cal's Megan Rogers pushed the Golden Bears up one more with a goal in the 38th minute. Just four minutes later, she capitalized again to push the lead to 3-0.
Â
The contest drastically changed pace after an Eagle time-out following the third goal. The Eagles recorded five shots within the next six minutes, capitalizing on a penalty corner in the 49th minute. The shot was made by Haverhals after a Wood insert.
Â
Just one minute later, senior Carly Kauffman cut the deficit to one. Wood also had an assist on the goal.
Â
Haverhals tied the game at three a piece in the 56th minute, once again off of a corner shot assisted by Wood. The equalizer eventually forced the second consecutive overtime game for the Eagles.
Â
The Eagles pulled a penalty corner just 43 seconds into overtime, but the shot was blocked. Cal grabbed the ball and brought it back into their offensive zone as Rogers tried for her third of the afternoon, but freshman goalkeeper Jonna Kennedy stayed on her toes and got the save.
Â
As the Eagles brought the ball out of their defensive zone, Haverhals secured the game-winner off of a pass from Wood.

COACHES' QUOTE
"That was one of the craziest games I've ever been a part of. Some teams can fold but after the timeout when we were down 3-0, the team got their legs and energy back and regained that 'refuse to lose' mentality. It was amazing to see them fight so hard for each other. Cal is a great team and this was an extremely hard game for us after our double overtime game against Syracuse yesterday. I'm so proud of their resiliency today." - Kelly Doton, Head Coach
