Newton Campus will host three games over the weekend
CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. – After a stint of road trips, the No. 12 Boston College field hockey team is set to play host to conference opponent and top-ranked North Carolina and in-state nonconference rival Massachusetts. The Eagles will face No. 1 North Carolina Friday, Oct. 12 at 5 p.m. and Massachusetts on Sunday at 2 p.m. Both contests will be held at the Newton Campus Field Hockey Complex.
The Eagles are coming off of a split weekend in Syracuse, N.Y. where they faced conference foe Syracuse and California-Berkeley. Despite a tough double-overtime 2-1 loss against Syracuse, the team showed resiliency and fought back against Cal to erase a 0-3 deficit and win, 4-3, in overtime. Senior captain Frederique Haverhals is credited with four of the five Eagle goals of the weekend: the lone against Syracuse and three against Cal, including the overtime game-winner. Haverhals now leads the team in goals (8), points (18), shots (35), and game-winners (3). Junior goalkeeper Sarah Dwyer played the full contest against Syracuse and was relieved by freshman Jonna Kennedy with less than 20 minutes remaining in regulation against Cal.
Since their first meeting after Boston College joined the Atlantic Coast Conference in 2005, the Eagles have only come out on top twice out of their 15 meetings. The Tar Heels knocked the Eagles out of the ACC Tournament in their first year with a 2-1 win and again 10 years later in 2015 with a final score of 3-2.
The undefeated Tar Heels have scored 62 goals over the season while only allowing 6. They are led by Erin Matson who has recorded 11 goals and nine assists to tally 31 points. Goalkeeper Amanda Hendry has allowed four of the six goals while Alex Halpin allowed the remaining two. Their perfect 13-0 record includes five wins over ACC opponents.
The Massachusetts Minutewomen head into the weekend with a 6-8 overall record. They are coming off of a 0-2 loss against Virginia Commonwealth after shutting out Richmond, 2-0, earlier that weekend. Antonet Louw leads the team with 14 goals and two assists so far this season. Goalkeeper Johanna von dem Borne has recorded 91 saves for a 2.68 goals against average.
Prior to Sunday's 2 p.m. matchup with Massachusetts, the Newton Campus Fields will host a neutral site contest between No. 1 North Carolina and No. 4 Connecticut at 11 a.m. The Eagles will host a post-game clinic from 4-6 p.m. following their game on Sunday. Athletes aged 12-19 interested in attending the camp can sign up here.
