BC captain one of 15 Division I players on preliminary ballot
OVERLAND PARK, Kan. – BC senior captain Michael Kim was among 15 of the top Division I men's hockey student-athletes who excel both on and off the ice selected as candidates for the 2018-19 Senior CLASS Award on Tuesday morning.
To be eligible for the award, a student-athlete must be classified as an NCAA Division I senior and have notable achievements in four areas of excellence: community, classroom, character and competition. An acronym for Celebrating Loyalty and Achievement for Staying in School, the Senior CLASS Award focuses on the total student-athlete and encourages students to use their platform in athletics to make a positive impact as leaders in their communities.
A two-year captain for the Eagles, Kim led all Boston College defensemen in scoring last season with a career-high 20 points and earned Hockey East Third Team All-Star honors. He ranked second on the team in both blocks and plus-minus while sitting third in multi-point games.
The Toronto native was named a 2017 and 2018 AHCA Division I All-American Scholar. He is also a three-time member of the Hockey East All-Academic Team and was recognized on the 2017 Hockey East All-Academic All-Star Team. In the community, Kim has volunteered his time with Toys for Tots and the East Coast Jumbos (special needs hockey team).
"Michael is truly a representative of all we are trying to do here at BC," said head coach Jerry York. "He's a young man who embraces the student-athlete model, has been a pleasure to coach, and is well respected by his peer group and faculty."
The 15 candidates will be narrowed to 10 finalists in February, and those 10 names will be placed on the official ballot. The Senior CLASS Award winner will be announced during the 2019 NCAA Men's Frozen Final Four in April.
