Meet the squad as men's tennis heads to its first invitational of the fall
CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. – The Boston College men's tennis team will begin their 2017-18 season at the Brown University Invitational, held Sept. 29 through Oct. 1.

RETURNERS FROM LAST SEASON
The Eagles have 12 returners from last season, including five sophomores, two juniors and five seniors. Senior Kent Mukai paced BC in wins last spring, going 9-12, securing four wins apiece at the No. 4 and No.5 position and contributing a win from the No. 1 spot. Sophomores Alexander Chieffalo registered eight wins last spring, while Derek Austin notched seven singles wins.

NEWCOMERS
This season's newcomers include freshmen Adriano Barilla, Chris Grasel and Santiago Montufar, sophomore transfer Max Palmer and graduate student Gereon Heitmann. Barilla played at IMG Academy in Florida before coming to BC and was a part of an Italian club called Circolo del Castellazzo. Grasel hails from Sao Paulo, Brazil, and won the 83rd Harper Ink Open. Heitmann played three seasons at Valdosta State University, where he made it to the National Quarterfinals in the spring of 2016 and was a member of the fifth ranked National DII team. The Gütersloh, Germany native was selected for the All-American Gulf South Conference First Team in 2016. Montufar is originally from Quito, Ecuador and was a two-time Ecuadorian Under-18 National Champion. Rounding out the newbies is Palmer, who transferred from Bucknell, finishing his freshman season 11-14 in singles. In high school, the Houston, Texas native won the 6A Texas state titles in doubles.

SEASON CAPTAINS
The 2017-18 captaincy was awarded to Mukai and fellow seniors Jeffrey Melvin and Will Turner. Melvin when 3-4 in singles play last spring, while Turner did not see action last season.
