BC completes four-game road swing
CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. – The eighth-ranked Boston College field hockey take on its fourth top-10 opponent this season with an Atlantic Coast Conference battle against fourth-ranked Virginia on Friday at 5 p.m. in Charlottesville, Va. The game will be streamed on the ACC Network Extra.
Â
The Eagles (6-2, 0-2 ACC) are still looking for their first conference win after falling to No. 7 Tar Heels, 2-1, in overtime last weekend in North Carolina. The Cavaliers (7-1, 1-0 ACC) defeated now No. 2 Duke, 4-1, at home to start their ACC slate on Sept. 8. Last weekend, they took victories over in-state opponents William & Mary and Richmond.
Â
BC is 7-12 all-time against UVA and 6-9 since the Eagles joined the ACC in 2005. They are 6-6 in regular-season play, winning the first three regular-season matchups. The Cavs have taken the last two meetings, earning a 2-1 win in Newton last year and taking a 6-3 victory at the ACC Tournament in Winston-Salem, N.C.
Â
Virginia is a high-powered offense, leading the league in most offensive categories, including scoring margin (4.88), goals (6.35), assists (5.00) and penalty corners (11.25). The Cavaliers also average 5.38 saves per game, tops in the ACC.
Â
BC will round out its four-game road swing with a neutral site tilt against Pacific. In the series history, the Eagles have not lost to the Tigers (3-5) in the five meetings. The two teams have not met up since 2007 when BC earned a 3-1 victory in Stanford, Calif. Four of the five contests have been on neutral grounds.
Â
The Eagles are perfect in non-conference play this season with two shutouts and four wins over ranked opponents.
Â
The BC freshman class has scored 13 of the team's 21 goals in 2017 and it has amassed 29 of the team's 57 total points. Freshman Jaime Natale leads the way with four goals while classmate Caroline McGovern is the only BC player to have two gamewinners. Freshmen Elizabeth Warner and Fusine Govaert have one apiece, accounting for five of the Eagles' six total. Warner is also second on the team with three goals.
Â
Through the first eight games of the season, the scoring has been spread out among 11 different Eagles. Two BC players have logged three assists each - senior Alesandra Miller and junior Ymke Rose Gote - while senior Chelcie Mendonca and McGovern have two apiece. In all, 13 of the Eagles' 20 student-athletes who have logged game minutes have recorded at least one point this season.
Â
Sophomore Sarah Dwyer is second in the ACC with 28 saves and her 1.50 goals-against average is fifth. In the 2-1 overtime loss to No. 7 North Carolina, she tallied a career-high nine saves, stopped 10 of 11 corners and 11 of 13 shots on goal. She recorded her first career shutout in the win against Providence and repeated the feat against No. 18 William & Mary on the road.
