Jon Baker and Kamrin Moore ready to lead the Eagles
CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. – While some roles on the football team have yet to be announced heading into Friday night's season opener in DeKalb, Ill., the leadership slots have been filled.
Â
With 17 returning starters and 14 seniors on the roster there is plenty of veteran influence, but it was announced last Friday that the players as a whole have turned to senior defensive back Kamrin Moore and senior center Jon Baker as their choices to captain the ship for the season.
Â
"These are really high character guys with great work ethic," head coach Steve Adazzio said. "They've played a lot of football here. So, you're talking about good players, veteran players that are about the right stuff. The players know, they know what goes on, so they've chosen those two guys as their leaders and I think those are really great choices."
Â
Junior running back Jon Hilliman added, "They're two selfless guys…phenomenal leaders on and off the field. As older guys, we're very happy that they're captains."
Â
Baker is considered a top center nationally, evident by his inclusion on the Rimington Trophy watch list to start the season.
Â
The Millis, Mass., native has started in every game the last two seasons, has seen playing time in 35 consecutive games and is a two-time ACC All-Academic team selection.
Â
"When he first got here he was kind of quiet," senior defensive end Harold Landry said of Baker. "Throughout his career he's definitely stepped up in a major way, and he's definitely a leader in that offensive line room and definitely a leader with the offense and the whole team."
Â
Moore came to campus from District Heights, Md., showing a continued commitment to improve himself and those around him.
Â
Following a season-sending injury mid-way through his sophomore campaign, the corner back bounced back with 43 tackles last season, 33 solo, fifth most on the team.
Â
"I was actually roommates with Kam last year," Landry said. "Kam is just a cool dude. People respect him because he backs up what he says. I think that's why he's going to do a great job being a captain for us."
Â
Both Baker and Moore were humble about their selection, grateful of their teammates acknowledging the hard work and dedication they have put into the program for three-plus years now.
Â
Both were also quick to point to those leaders that came before them, taught them how to approach things on and off the field in the proper sense and instilled a work ethic in them that they plan to carry on with the younger classes.
Â
"Going hard every day, showing up prepared mentally and physically and just being able to lead by example," Baker said of what he learned in watching past captains and leaders of the Eagles. "It's a position of leadership, but it's kind of a place I've been in for a while now. Don't let it be any added pressure, just keep on doing what I've been doing and hopefully get better at it with another year of experience under my belt."
Â
"I'm thankful for my teammates for thinking so highly of me and selecting me," said Moore. "It's a lot of responsibility. Coming to this program I had a lot of players before me to teach me some leadership qualities, in order to lead by example and be vocal when I need to."
