Goss Paces Eagles in Season Opener

Volleyball drops first of the season to Fairfield in the BC Invitational
CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. – After a tough fight, the Boston College volleyball team fell 3-0 to Fairfield in their season opener Friday evening in Power Gym.
Following a first set loss of 25-18, Boston College (0-1) gained some energy and followed Sol Cavete's perfect kill average but fell in a tight 26-24 second-set loss.
McKenna Goss led the Eagles with seven kills, while Cat Balido and Calvete added six apiece. Jill Strokis registered a team-high 12 digs.
Fairfield (1-0) was paced by Skyler Day's 12 kills and Taylor Rudeen game-high 17 digs.
The Eagles will be back in Power Gym tomorrow afternoon at 1 p.m. to take on Providence, then will close out the BC Invitational against UAB in the nightcap at 7:30 p.m.

BC HIGHLIGHTS
- Freshmen Amaka Chukwujekwu, Alinda Dersjant, Clare Naughton, Madison McKnight and Ally Mullen made their collegiate debut against the Stags.
- Chukwujekwu tallied four blocks, while Mullen recorded fives in their first match.
- Sol Calvete went perfect for kills in the second set and maintained a .800 hitting average in the third set.
- McKenna Goss totaled seven kills over the course of the match.
- Jane DeJarld recorded 10 assists.
HOW IT HAPPENED
SET 1
Early in the set, Fairfield held a 6-1 run. After back and forth and a late surge of energy from the Eagles, ultimately the Stags came out on top, 25-18.
SET 2
A kill from Mullen began a 4-1 run for the Eagles. A kill from Calvete and an ace from Chukwujekwu put BC in the lead, 10-8. In the final points, the contest was anyone's, but the Stags prevailed, 26-24.
SET 3
Fairfield began the match on a 5-0, holding the lead for the whole set, 26-16, ultimately winning the match.
