Newcomers Shine in Season-Opening Win

Freshman Natale scores first two career goals
NEWTON, Mass. – The Boston College field hockey team earned a 6-1 victory over Quinnipiac to start the 2017 season. Logging their 14th straight victory over the Bobcats, the Eagles' freshman class scored four goals to start their careers at The Heights.

The Eagles (1-0) tabbed their 10th straight season-opening win, led by freshman Jaime Natale, who scored the first goal of the game and knocked in a second one in the second half. Classmate Cassidy Atchinson's first career goal in the 16th minute went down as the game-winner.

Sophomore goalie Sarah Dwyer (1-0) recorded one save in her first career start.

HOW IT HAPPENED
GOAL: BC 1, QU 0; 10:07: Natale scored on a direct shot to the left corner of the cage.
GOAL: BC 2, QU 0; 15:53: Atchison netted her first collegiate goal off a rebound on junior Frederique Haverhal's initial shot on the Eagles' first corner attempt.
GOAL: BC 3, QU 0; 40:09: Haverhals scored on a direct shot on goal on a corner. Senior Alesandra Miller inserted the ball to start the play and classmate Chelcie Mendonca made the stick stop for Haverhals.
GOAL: BC 4, QU 0; 54:03: Freshman Elizabeth Warner notched her first collegiate goal on classmate Caroline McGovern's first career assist. Warner received the pass from McGovern and made a spin move into the circle to notch the Eagles' fourth goal.
GOAL: BC 5, QU 0; 60:58: Natale recorded her second goal of the game on Miller's centered pass. Natale connected on a reverse shot from the top of the circle.
GOAL: BC 5, QU 1; 64:52: Selina Reichert inserted to Lauren Belskie on the Bobcats' corner and Reichert's shot hit the post and ricocheted past Dwyer for the score.
GOAL: BC 6, QU 1; 68:44: Junior Kaitie Fink tipped in Mendonca's direct shot on net on another BC corner.

"We started off the game slow and it took us a while to get going. Our ball speed was down. We didn't implement the focuses we had in the presentation before the game but when Quinnipiac called the timeout (with 11:44 to play in the first half) we got together and regrouped. We refocused, came back out and executed better the second half. We made a couple of adjustments. It was the first game so we have some things we need to fix but overall a win is a win; we are 1-0 and we are looking forward to playing Albany on Sunday."
