Eagles will play a scrimmage against USL club New York Red Bulls II
CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. – After a full week of facing each other in preseason camp, the Boston College men's soccer team gets its first taste of a different opponent on Tuesday morning.
The Eagles have traveled to northern New Jersey to play New York Red Bulls II, a professional team that plays in the USL and is affiliated with the Major League Soccer side of the same name.
Kicking off at the Red Bulls' training facility in Whippany, N.J., at 11 a.m., BC will not only test themselves against a new opponent, but will also face former Eagle Zeiko Lewis.
Red Bull drafted Lewis with the 17th overall selection in the 2017 MLS SuperDraft. Lewis was a four-time All-ACC selection after winning the conference's 2013 rookie of the year award. The Bermuda international has spent the season so far with NYRBII where he has tallied two goals in 17 appearances.
The last week of training has bolstered the Eagles' enthusiasm for the season, starting with their first competitive action tomorrow.
"This week has been very good so far," junior Joshua Forbes said. "Everyone is very excited to play again and I think we have a very, very good group this year. Everyone is very competitive. We play hard and everyone is running a lot. I'm very excited for the season; everyone is.
"On Tuesday, it'll be our first game. It's against a tough opponent. Everyone is excited and we'll see that on the field," Forbes added.
Another Eagle who'll be excited to step on the field Tuesday is sophomore midfielder Callum Johnson, a product of the Red Bull Academy.
"I'm really looking forward to it," Johnson said, who's calls New York City home. "I know most of those guys, and the head coach John Wolyniec. It's not quite home – they train in New Jersey – but it's a facility I'm very familiar with. It'll be good to get some of the incoming freshmen in and incorporating them into our team.
And Johnson's knowledge with the Red Bulls may just prove fruitful for the Eagles.
"I know their pressing system very well, so hopefully I can give Ed a little insight into that," Johnson chuckled.
