Junior started all 13 games at tight end in 2016
CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - The Friends of John Mackey have released the 2017 John Mackey Award Preseason Watch List and Boston College junior tight end Tommy Sweeney has been named to the list. Given annually to the most outstanding collegiate tight end, the award recipient is selected by vote of the John Mackey Award Selection Committee and the 2017 Mackey Award recipient will be announced on December 6, 2017 and then presented live on December 7, 2017 at The Home Depot College Football Awards Red Carpet Show on ESPNU.
Â
NFL Hall of Fame member John Mackey is considered to be the best to have played the tight end position. A tight end by whom all others are measured, Mackey was a role model on and off the field as demonstrated by his Super Bowl Championship, his commitment to community and his place in history as the first President of the NFLPA.
Â
Sweeney is coming off a strong 2016 campaign in which he started all 13 games at tight end. The New Jersey native finished the year with 26 receptions for 353 yards and three touchdowns. He was third on the team in receiving yards.
Â
Sweeney caught the game-winning touchdown in two of BC's wins on the road at NC State and Wake Forest. He also hauled in a two-yard touchdown reception in the 36-30 victory over Maryland in the Quick Lane Bowl.
Â
Sweeney and the Eagles report for the start of preseason camp Monday, July 31. The Eagles hold their first practice of the 2017 season on Tuesday, August 1.
